So you have been thinking of starting a blog? Are you looking for the easiest and cost effective way to do this? Let me see if I can help you answer those questions. I have had a few people ask me how to start a blog. I decided to write this post to answer those questions to help you start a blog today! Starting a blog can be a quick process or it can take a week or two. It all depends if you already know the name of your blog.

First, you have to pick a domain name. How you do that is you start by asking yourself some questions like these. What are you going to write about? Who is your target audience? Then as you think about these things, write down words or phrases that pop in your mind that you could put together and create a name. When I was doing this I had a double sided sheet of paper full of words that I was sticking together. Once you have 2 or 3 names you like, go to a website like GoDaddy and check to see if that domain is available and buy it! Your Domain will cost around $12 for a year.

Once you have your domain name, you need to get hosting. I chose to do hosting with BlueHost and they have been so very helpful to me. I have called them when I locked myself out of my blog and they were so so nice. Then when I bought a new domain name they set up the whole redirect for me! I just sat on the phone with them for about 10 minutes while it was all done. There are other hosting companies out there. For now, I recommend BlueHost because they have been so helpful. Not to mention they are pretty inexpensive! Their normal pricing is $3.95 a month for a 36 month term.

Once your domain and hosting is set up, you need to download WordPress.org to your site. It’s free too! WordPress.org is for self hosted sites and that is what you are since you bought a domain and bought hosting. This part is super easy but takes a few minutes to download. I remember I took a short break after this part because it took the longest.

Now you need a theme. StudioPress has lots of themes, you can see them here at StudioPress Themes for WordPress. Some are free and some are not. I recommend buying Genesis and a child theme. I did not do this at first and my blog was a big fat mess for like 6 months until I learned more. This is my single biggest regret I have made since I started blogging. I am not technical so figuring out a free theme was a challenge and it drove me crazy! Please do not make the same mistake I made! If you can afford to spend $120 on the child theme and Genesis, do it now. The amount of frustration it will save you is totally worth it. Plus, a theme will give you stability until you can have a site custom designed. I am using the child theme from Restored 316, called Darling. Their customer service has been amazing and I love that when I send them an email they send one back to me within 24 hours.

Create a logo

You can create a logo in Canva.com for free! I created my original for free then I had a friend, who is a designer, do my current logo. Choose the colors you like and go for it. It won’t take you long and I’m sure you will come up with something awesome! Once it is done, upload it to your blog in header.

All you have left to do is customize your site! That can take a couple hours but you can do it! I did it without any help. I did have to pour myself a glass of wine so I wouldn’t get so frustrated (remember, I hate computers) but I got it done.
